Unique Eyewear for Unique People

where fashion and fit converge

Optical Factory - East York Town Centre

Optical Factory Located in one of the original indoor malls of Toronto, the store has been at this location for 50 yrs. The mall is located near major traffic arteries (Don Mills and Eglington, south of the Ontario Science Centre) and has ample parking. The mall is close to downtown but without the hassle of downtown. There might be fancier places to shop in but then wouldn't you prefer to  pay a fair price for  the eyewear you want rather than being gouged, no matter how splendid the surroundings are. Remember - you take the eyewear with you but you leave the "atmosphere" behind.  The store carries many frame lines including JF Rey, Boz, Orgreen, Bellinger, Kilsgaard, Eye DC, Prodesign, Police, Parasite, Derapage, Enox, Iyoko Inyake, 'EM, Kame ManEn, Dilem, Dutz, some vintage (20-30 yrs old) and more. We are no stranger to discount either. Before we redirected our focus to unique designers the store did considerable business as a discounter. We still have a very large selection of attractive discount frames including a large free frame collection .The store's products are as diverse as the neighbourhood we are located in.   The store is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 9 pm , Saturday from 930am to 6pm and closed Sunday. Come in and see Fred  or Elizabeth and sometimes Cindy.  If you are planning to visit the store remember to call us first to check if the frame you are interested in is in stock.

contact lenses
We supply many brands of contact lenses at very competative prices. We do charge an initial fitting fee of $50 for fitting (topography and slit lamp examination) There is also a $25 fee if training is required.  Once the file is created replacement lenses can be ordered at a price which is often less than most of the online lens retailers.

Plus there is the  assurance that if you have questions or difficulties you can come in to a real brick and mortar office for consultation and advice usually without charge. You won't  be getting advice from someone you can't see and who can't see you over the phone - that just doesn't work. So here you have the best of both worlds - the advice and care of a licensed, experienced professional and great prices - the smart choice.

What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is a non surgical procedure for correcting myopia. Specially designed gas permeable contact lenses are inserted prior to sleep and during sleep the cornea is gently reshaped allowing the vision to be corrected. In the morning the lenses are removed and clear vision is possible without glasses or contact lenses. It is a temporary effect that normally lasts for the day though some wearers with moderate Rxs who have been using the lenses for several months may find the effect can last more than a day.

Orthokeratology has been used since the 1960's. It was noticed at a time when  contact lens wearers were wearing the hard contact lenses. Contact lens fitters noticed that when the patients were coming in for checkups that they were seeing much better than they should have after removing their lenses in the office. This was due to the reshaping effect of the hard lenses. It was first considered an anomaly or nuisance - an unintended effect of wearing the hard lenses. However Dr. Jessen an optometrist saw the possibilities of intentionally using this effect to correct vision .

In the 1960's only very light Rxs could be corrected and it was an expensive process requiring the change of many sets of lenses till the final set was ready to be worn.

Today gas permeable materials are used in the manufacturing of contact lenses and multicurve reverse geometry lens designs accelerate the process of corneal reshaping dramatically. Sometimes the corrective effect of the modern lenses can be seen in as little as 45 minutes of lens wear.

Unlike lasik orthokeratology is reversible - if the wearer stops using the lenses the corneas will return to the original shape. It can be used in situations that are not appropriate for lasik. People too young for lasik can have their vision corrected with orthokeratology. Those that have dry eyes can benefit from orthokeratology whereas lasik might worsen the dry eye sensation. Orthokeratology is also much less expensive than having lasik done.

If you are interested in trying orthokeratology or wanting more information on the subject give us a call at 416-421-1278 or 905-492-3368. Or email us.
